Lupercalia, a festival of fertility and purification was practiced on this day.  Men ran through the streets with nothing but a wolf-mask and loincloth on.  The struck passers-by with goat's hide.  Women who hoped to get pregnant would stop and allow themselves to be hit by the blows. (Blackburn)
