This Day In Ancient and Roman History

Modern Date:
January
24th
Roman Date:
Coming Soon
Interesting Notes:
This month is sacred to Janus, the god of Beginnings.
Major Happenings:
  • On this day in 41 AD, Caligula was murdered along with his wife and infant child by a Praetorian tribune while attending the Palatine games.  The assassin was a man that Caligula had often tormented with demeaning practical jokes.  I guess he got the last laugh.
  • On this day in 76 AD, the Emperor Hadrian was born.
  • The Sementivae or Paganalia was a movable festival held around this time.  This was apparently a festival of spring sowing or for protection of seed sown the previous autumn or both.  Offerings were made to Tellus on the first day and to Ceres on the second day.
